The first iteration of the Old Fashioned Cocktail came about in the early 1800’s, then named the plain ‘whiskey cock tail’. It was a mix of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. As the popularity of the ‘cock tail’ grew through the 19th century, so did the complexity of the mixed drinks. It became increasingly popular to add and experiment with other garnishes, fruit juices, and sweeteners. As bartenders added more complex and sugary drinks to their menus, it became common for patrons to request their drinks be made the ‘old-fashioned’ way, thus leading to the popularity of the Old Fashioned Cocktail.

The verion of the cocktail most popular today still consists of the original whiskey, bitters, ice, and water. However, it is often mixed with a simple syrup and muddled fruit and is served with a garnish of an orange peel and a cherry. The ‘correct’ way to mix an Old Fashioned is still debated among many across the world despite its very conventional roots and emphasis on familiarity.

This set is a nod to the fluctuant idea of the ‘classic’.  As time marches on and our culture changes, it becomes harder and harder to determine what to regard as the one and true old-fashioned way.

Inspired by the retro-futuristic style, the RETROGRADE Cocktail Set puts a playful twist on an iconic part of American culture and imagines what it’s like to honor our traditions while challenging our routines.

TOOLS REQUIRED TO MIX AN OLD-FASHIONED COCKTAIL
  1. Chill your Glass: Add ice into your glass & let chill.
  2. Muddle the Sugar Cube: Place the sugar cube in your Old Fashioned glass. Add a few dashes of Angostura bitters and a few drops of water. Using a muddler, crush the sugar cube until it dissolves.
  3. Pour the Whiskey: Measure 2 ounces of your preferred bourbon or rye whiskey using a jigger, and pour it over the ice.
  4. Add Ice: Fill the glass with a large ice cube or several smaller ones.
  5. Stir: Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently but thoroughly. Aim for about 20-30 rotations to ensure the ingredients are well combined and the drink is properly chilled.
  6. Peel & Garnish: Peel a small section of rind off an orange. Express the oils from the orange twist over the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a gentle twist. Drop the twist into the glass for a touch of color. For an extra touch of elegance, add a cherry skewered on a toothpick.
